Minnesota United and Club León Battle to a 1-1 Draw in Front of 9,388
July 18, 2015 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
Minnesota United FC News Release
BLAINE, Minn. (Saturday, July 18th, 2015) -- Minnesota United welcomed Liga MX side Club León to the National Sports Center in Blaine for an international friendly match to send off former United player Miguel Ibarra. Ibarra played one half for each team, who fought to a 1-1 draw in front of a sellout crowd of 9,388.
Ibarra rejoined his former teammates for the first half, taking his familiar role as an outside midfielder. He made several key plays and nearly set up a goal for Pablo Campos early in the half. Ibarra was subbed out in the 32nd minute to a standing ovation from the crowd and a warm reception from the United staff.
"It was very emotional to see Miguel out there again," said United Head Coach Manny Lagos. "He has been a great servant for this club and for Minnesota soccer. It was a special night for him and I thought he had some nice moments in the game. He's been such a good player in the past and he has a bright future going forward."
León controlled most of the action in the first half, and had the majority of the chances as well. Neither team was able to find a breakthrough until late in the half. A corner kick was flicked out of the box via a header from a Minnesota defense. The ball fell to the feet of Aldo Rocha, who ripped a volley shot from outside the penalty area into the top corner of the net to give León the lead before halftime.
Ibarra made his debut for his new club midway through the second half, nearly scoring on his former club on a breakaway chance. La Fiera continued to control the game, but Minnesota was able to create several chances of its own as the match went on.
United finally broke through in the closing minutes of the match as Brent Kallman turned his defender and ran toward goal. He played a ball to the center of the box to forward Pablo Campos, who was waiting to pull the trigger. Campos skillfully chipped the ball over the León goalkeeper Christian Martinez to level the match. Minnesota was able to survive a late barrage from La Fiera and held on to come away with a 1-1 draw.
"It was good to have a high level team out here and passionate supporters from both teams who provided a great atmosphere tonight," said Lagos.
Minnesota will travel to face the San Antonio Scorpions next Saturday, July 25th, as United continues its NASL Fall Season with a three-game roadtrip. The Loons return home on August 8th to host FC Edmonton. Tickets are available by calling 763.4SOCCER or visiting MNUnitedFC.com/tickets.
