Minnesota Ripknees News Release
Your True Hometown Team
The Ripknees do not only represent Minnesota by name, but six of our players are from Minnesota, mostly from the Twin Cities. Johnnie Gilbert and Tyrell Sledge both played for Coach McKenzie at Minneapolis Henry. Gilbert was on the All-State first team and was the Minneapolis City Player of the Year, scoring over 1,000 points and grabbing over 1,000 rebounds in his high school career. Levy Jones and Jamel Staten went to Minneapolis North High School. Jones was on All-Conference team, played in the Inner-City Classic, and led the team to the State Tournament. Staten was on the All-State first team, averaging 18 points and 14 rebounds his senior year. Staten transferred from the University of Northern Illinois to play for Minnesota State Mankato and received first team All-American honors his senior season. Jerry Holman played ball at Humbolt High School in St. Paul. He went on to become an All-American at Minneapolis Community and Technical College and decided to stay in town and play for the University of Minnesota after receiving offers from Cincinnati, Iowa State, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State. Mitch Ohnstad went to Faribault High School, where he was awarded Minnesota's "Mr. Basketball" in 1996 and racked up 2805 career points to place him fifth all-time in the state of Minnesota. He then went on to star for the Minnesota Gophers. Everyone has watched, played against, or played with at least one Minnesota Ripknee, so come out and support your hometown boys this season.
