Minnesota Ripknees News Release
Galie Juddunath
Galie has been with the Ripknees from the beginning; she has been the Director of Promotions and Event Coordinator since October, 2006. She also works with community and public relations. She has been able to do all of this while being the single mother of daughter Julissa, who is 9 years old. Galie moved to Minnesota from her home country of Guyana, which is located in South America, when she was 14 years old. She went to John F. Kennedy Sr. High School in Bloomington and then received a Public Relations and Mass Communications degree from MCTC. Her promotional work for KMOJ radio station introduced her to Coach McKenzie. For the upcoming 2007-2008 season Galie will be in charge of game operations for the Ripknees.
Saints
The Ripknees organization will be shadowing the Saints and observing their order of operations this Friday. Coach McKenzie will be taking batting practice with the team and will coach first base for one inning. Come out to see if he can make a smoother transition to baseball than Jordan did.
Moving On Up
The office and headquarters of the Ripknees is changing within the Best Western Kelly Inn. We are acquiring some more space for our expanding organization and a more aesthetically pleasing view by moving from the ninth to the tenth floor. There will be an open house for all of you to see our new office and meet the Ripknees' players on Thursday, August 23. Our new address is:
161 St. Anthony Ave.
Suite 1001 St. Paul, MN 55103
Mitch Ohnstad
The Ripknees are very fortunate to have Mitch playing for us. He holds fifth place in career points for high school basketball in the state of Minnesota with 2,805 points. Mitch was Minnesota's "Mr. Basketball" in 1996 and was an All-State selection twice in track and field. He went on to star at the University of Minnesota and graduated in 2001 with a degree in Communications. This summer he is continuing to give back to basketball community in the state. He runs the Minnesota School of Basketball, which has basketball training facilities in Apple Valley and Lakeville. He is excited and gearing up for the upcoming Ripknee and Gopher seasons. He believes that Tubby Smith will "bring an exciting name to the (Gopher's) program and has some of the best experience that the world of coaching has to offer." As for the Ripknees, Mitch is excited for the new challenge of playing in the PBL looks forward to seeing the league come together.
PBL Combine
The Premier Basketball League is holding a national tryout on Saturday, August 11. It is going to be held at Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, Maryland from 9 AM to 5 PM. The tryout is taking place in preparation for the PBL Lottery Draft on October 1, 2007. Twenty-five players will be selected from a series of three tryouts to become eligible to be selected by a PBL team. For more information or to request registration go to www.pblpro.com or call (301)424-8612.
Summer Camps
The Camp For Champs has been a success in bringing kids out to the St. Paul Salvation Army and teaching them about the game of basketball. There was a camp held last week and another one began again this week.
Upcoming Events
The Ripknees will be at the Urban League Family Day Parade. The parade is the fourth largest in Minneapolis. It starts on the corner of Xerxes and Plymouth at noon on Saturday, August 4. On the same day from 1:30 to 3 PM there will be a block party and youth conference at Shilo Temple. The Ripknees will be represented there as well.
