
Miners sweep Japan

MESA, ARIZONA -The Mesa Miners (21-11) swept a three-game series against the Japan Samurai Bears (9-21) 4-3 at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona and are now a season high ten games over .500.
Samurai Bears catcher Shin Uchino started the scoring in the first with an RBI single off of Miners starter Manny Ayala (5-2) to put the Bears up 1-0. The Miners started their ten run outburst in the bottom of the second when Julius Thames singled in the Miners first run of the evening. Digz Edwards added and an RBI with a sacrifice fly and then Golden Baseball League RBI leader Marcus Knight drove in two with a single to centerfield to put the Miners out in front 4-1. Japan starter Rentaro Seki (4-2) took the loss after only lasting two innings while allowing 4 runs. Takahisa Motono added another RBI single in the third for the Samurai Bears to make the score 4-2. The Miners didn't waste time in answering Japan as they scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth highlighted by another RBI single from Digz Edwards.
The Miners tacked on 2 more in the bottom of the fifth when Adam Bonner scored on a wild pitch and Marcus Jensen added an RBI sacrifice fly. Paul Powell had an RBI single in the sixth to make the score 10-2 which was more than enough for the Miners to complete the sweep. Japan tried to rally late scoring two runs in the seventh off of reliever Dan Birely. Dan Burkhardt came in to pitch two scoreless innings while striking out five of the eight batters he faced.
The Miners will travel to San Diego to take on the Surf Dawgs in a battle for the best record in the Golden Baseball League. The four-game series begins tomorrow night at Tony Gwynn Stadium at 7:05 p.m.
