Miners Fall to Gateway

Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (September 1, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners saw the Gatway Grizzlies take a big lead in the first with five runs on the scoreboard and could not muster up much offensively in a 7-1 defeat on Tuesday night in Sauget, snapping the team's seven-game win streak at GCS Ballpark.
Ryan Brockett (3-3) got the start for the Miners and was roughed up in the first thanks to two home runs. A three-run homer over the short porch in right field by Ben Waldrip made it 3-0 and Tyler Tewell lined a two-run shot over the porch for a 5-0 first inning lead for the home team. Brockett would settle down in the subsequent innings, allowing just two baserunners between the first and the sixth innings with only one hit surrendered. Niko Vasquez then plated the only Miners run of the game with his 16th home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center that made the score 5-1 in the top of the sixth.
But Tewell got that run right back on his second two-run homer of the contest off of Brockett, again over the short right field wall for a 7-1 Gateway lead that stood up for the final margin. It was just the Miners' second loss in their last 11 games overall, with the team falling to 61-30 with the defeat as they managed just four total hits on the game. They will look to bounce back on Wednesday night in the middle game of the series at 7:05 p.m., with Jarett Miller on the mound against Gateway's Dakota Smith.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
