Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners fell to the Normal CornBelters 3-2 on Saturday night at Rent One Park on a late homer in the top of the eighth by Ty Morris off Evan Mott, dropping the series with their second-straight loss.
On the night where Southern Illinois brought back the members of their All-Decade Team, honoring them and celebrating 10 seasons of Miners baseball in a pregame ceremony in front of over four-thousand fans, it was the CornBelters getting on the board first on a solo homer by Santiago Chirino off of Rick Teasley. The Miners got the score tied with a two-out rally off of rookie starter Vince Apicella, when Julius Gaines singled and Nolan Earley was hit by a pitch before Alex De Leon knotted the score with an RBI single up the middle at 1-1.
Normal would take the lead again on a two-out hit by Chirino, scoring Michael Skoller, who led off the frame with a walk, from first base when the relay throw home was dropped at the plate. With the score now 2-1, however, the Miners got the run right back in the bottom half of the frame when Aaron Gates led off with a triple, extending his hitting streak to 12 in a row. Gaines brought him home with a ground ball to shortstop to tie it at 2-2.
Teasley was on his game all night, as the left-hander pitched seven strong innings, allowing five hits and two runs while walking two and tying his career-high with 11 strikeouts in the contest. But after he departed, Morris clubbed a pitch from Mott (1-1) over the right field fence to give the visitors a 3-2 lead. In the ninth inning, Shane Kennedy singled with one out and stole second base with two outs, but pinch-hitter Riley Moore struck out to end the game.
The Miners will look to salvage the series finale on Sunday night at 5:05 p.m. in Marion, sending Josh Kimborowicz to the mound against Normal's Michael Schweiss.
