ThunderBolts' Comeback Falls Short in 8-6 Loss

WASHINGTON, PA - The ThunderBolts stranded seven men in scoring position and fell just short in an 8-6 loss to the Washington Wild Things at Consol Energy Park Saturday night.
The ThunderBolts (19-13) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on Coco Johnson's solo home run in the first inning. That was the first of Johnson's four hits in the game.
Washington (17-14) quickly responded, putting up a three-spot in the bottom of the first. Jamal Austin singled and David Popkins walked in front of a three-run Jimmy Yezzo home run.
Blair Beck's solo homer in the second brought the Bolts back to within one, but they could not tie the score as they left Cody Keefer, who had doubled, at third base.
Washington opened up their lead with a Yezzo RBI single in the third, but again the Bolts fought back. Tim Zier's RBI fielder's choice in the fifth scored Taylor Smart, who had walked, but Washington got out of the inning without further damage as the Bolts left the bases loaded.
Bryan Haar's two-run home run in the sixth made the score 6-3 in favor of Washington.
In the key moment of the game, the ThunderBolts loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh. They got one run as Corey Bass was hit by a pitch, but Beck hit into a double play, one of four in the ballgame for Windy City hitters and they managed only two runs in the rally, still trailing by one.
The Wild Things padded their lead over the final two innings, scoring in the seventh on a double steal and in the eighth on a Logan Uxa home run.
Down by three in the ninth, the Bolts got doubles from Johnson and Bass to score one run but couldn't complete the comeback.
Sam Agnew-Wieland (2-0) pitched 1.1 innings out of the Washington bullpen and picked up the win, while Mitchell Cody (0-2) gave up six runs in four innings for the loss.
The ThunderBolts and Wild Things wrap up their series with game three on Sunday evening. Brady Muller (1-3, 3.98) will get the start for the Bolts against Washington's Matt Fraudin (2-1, 3.00). First pitch from Consol Energy Park is scheduled for 4:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
