Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, ILL. - The Southern Illinois Miners had a season-high total of 6,428 fans in the ballpark on Stand Up For Blue Night on Thursday against the Normal CornBelters at Rent One Park, but could not get the sweep they desired as the visitors salvaged the series finale with a 6-2 win.
The game was scoreless until the third inning, when three straight two-out hits by Ty Morris, Santiago Chirino and Aaron Dudley produced two runs off COREY SESSIONS and made it 2-0. The CornBelters then increased the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Nolan Meadows before the Miners were able to fight back in the bottom half of the inning.
After getting runners on base in each inning leading up to the fifth against Normal starter Chris Carmain (6-6) before the right-hander was able to work out of the jams, with two outs, FRANCISCO ROSARIO reached on an infield single and AARON GATES lined a single into the outfield before BRANDON CUMMINS walked to load the bases. SHANE KENNEDY then knocked a single into left-center to plate two runs and make the score 3-2.
That was the closest the Miners got, however, as they were unable to get the tying run across in the late innings, and Normal would add three insurance runs (also with two outs) in the top of the ninth for the final margin as the Miners settled for a two-games-to-one series victory. Kennedy went 1-for-3 with the two RBIs and Rosario and Gates both had two-hit nights for the Miners offensively. Sessions (0-2) pitched five innings and allowed just two earned runs, but took the loss for Southern Illinois.
The Miners head to Evansville next for a weekend series against the Otters beginning on Friday night at Bosse Field. DYLLON NUERNBERG will take the mound for the Miners against Evansville's Preston Olson.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
