MARION, ILL.- The Southern Illinois Miners fell behind 1-0 in the first, but then proceeded to score eleven unanswered runs in an 11-1 throttling of the Normal CornBelters on Wednesday night at Rent One Park, taking the series by winning the first two games and winning their third-straight game overall to improve to 50-24 on the season.

Against BROOKS TRUJILLO in the first, a walk followed by a single and a double, all with two outs, got the visitors the early lead at 1-0.

But Trujillo (3-3) would settle down in what would become the finest outing of his rookie season to this point, as he pitched a career-high seven innings and scattered six hits and the lone run on the hill to win his third game in his last four starts. The offense, which drew three walks but did not score in the second inning, got ahead in the third when with two outs, STEVE MARINO hit a fly ball to center field that was lost in the lights for a double, with AARON GATES and NOLAN EARLEY both scoring on the play to make it 2-1 Miners.

They would break open the game in the fifth inning, as after a Gates groundout to start the inning, BRANDON CUMMINS walked and stole second before SHANE KENNEDY drove him in with a single to make it 3-1.

Kennedy then stole second before an Earley RBI single made the score 4-1, and then Earley also stole second base before Marino hit his second double of the game, making the score 5-1. After ALEX DE LEON walked to knock out starter Michael Schweiss (7-5), TOBY DEMELLO (who had come in off the bench in the frame as a defensive replacement) launched a game-breaking, three-run homer to left-center field off Matt Chavarria to extend the lead to 8-1.

The Miners were not done there. They tacked on another run on yet another double by Marino in the sixth inning, and then used a Gates triple and an error by Normal shortstop Santiago Chirino to plate two more in the seventh inning for the final margin.

Marino led the charge by going 3-for-4 with three doubles and four RBIs in the contest, while DeMello drove in three with his home run ball. Earley scored three times, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Kennedy and WILLI MARTIN also had two-hit games in the win.

Southern Illinois will go for the sweep on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m.

against the CornBelters, with COREY SESSIONS taking the mound for the Miners against Normal's Chris Carmain.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
