Miners Drop Rubber Match at River City

Southern Illinois Miners News Release
O'Fallon, MO - The Southern Illinois Miners' offense was frustrated on Thursday night at CarShield Field, as they were held to four hits by the River City Rascals in a 4-1 loss, dropping the series two games to one and falling back to the .500 mark at 6-6 on the season.
The first part of the game was a stout pitcher's duel as the Miners' Steven Ridings (1-1) held the Rascals to no runs on just one hit in the first four innings, while River City's Alec Byrd (2-0) scattered just two hits over the first four innings along with no runs. That changed in the fifth, as two walks and a controversial hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Trevor Achenbach with two outs, and the infielder lined a bases-clearing double that was just fair inside the left field line to plate three runs and put the home team up 3-0.
Byrd would continue to fluster the Miners on the mound, finishing with seven shutout innings and nine strikeouts while allowing only three hits and a pair of walks. Southern Illinois would avoid being shut out on the scoreboard when Gianfranco Wawoe led off the ninth inning with a solo home run to make it 4-1, but it was not enough in the series finale.
The Miners will continue their road trip in Florence, Kentucky, taking on the Florence Freedom in a three-game series beginning on Friday night at 5:05 p.m. Austin Dubsky will throw in the series opener for Southern Illinois.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the Frontier League's most-successful franchise since debuting in 2007, winning the 2012 Frontier League Championship as well as division titles in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in their inaugural season.
