Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, ILL. (JULY 5, 2016) - The Southern Illinois Miners scored 12 runs on 15 hits and tacked on runs in every inning except one after the third, overwhelming the Florence Freedom at UC Health Stadium on Tuesday night by the final score of 12-4, and bouncing back after back-to-back defeats in Traverse City to improve to 31-14 on the season.
An RBI single by RILEY MOORE opened up the scoring in the fourth, but Florence would get a two-out RBI single from Josh Henderson to tie the score at 1-1 through four innings off of JOSH KIMBOROWICZ. The Miners would take the lead for good with three runs in the fifth, including an RBI double by VIN GUGLIETTI and an RBI groundout by NOLAN EARLEY.
But Southern Illinois did not let up from there, as Moore clubbed his first professional home run leading off the sixth against Florence starter Jeremy Gooding (3-5), and later in the frame, SHANE KENNEDY's RBI single off Pete Levitt made the score 6-2 Miners.
Florence would chase Kimborowicz (7-0) in the sixth inning with a three-run rally to make it 6-4, but in the frame, with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate, KYLE TINIUS induced a double play grounder from Henderson and got a ground ball to ALEX DE LEON at first to minimize the damage. Kimborowicz would finish with two earned runs on six hits in five-plus innings to improve to a perfect 7-0 on the season, and thanks to more great relief by the Miners' bullpen, including two strikeouts in a scoreless inning in the season debut for reigning Pitcher of the Year ADAM LOPEZ, Florence would not score again.
Meanwhile, the Miners kept on scoring. In the seventh, a two-out, two-run single by AARON GATES widened the margi to 8-4, and four more tallies in the ninth inning, including an RBI double by Kennedy and an RBI single by Guglietti, completed the scoring. Kennedy led the charge offensively, going 4-for-6 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs, with Moore going 3-for-5 with a homer, two runs scored and two RBIs and Guglietti, Gates and Earley all notching two-hit nights. The 12 runs and 15 hits the Miners amassed were their most in a game since scoring a season-high 14 runs on 16 hits on June 22nd at River City, a span of eleven games.
The Miners and Freedom will next face off in a doubleheader beginning at 9:05 a.m. central time on Wednesday morning. JARETT MILLER will face the Freedom's Tony Vocca in the first game, while BROOKS TRUJILLO will make the start for the Miners in the second game against Florence's Patrick McGrath.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
