Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Evansville, IN - The Southern Illinois Miners lost 10-0 at Bosse Field to the Evansville Otters on Wednesday night, their fourth loss in their last five games overall, to drop the series on the road.
The game was scoreless through the first three innings, with Geno Encina allowing just one hit on the mound for the Miners while Southern Illinois could not get to Otters' starter Spencer Medick. In the top of the fourth inning, the Miners had a chance to score the game's first run, loading the bases with one out on a walk by Nolan Earley, a single by Chance Shepard and a walk by Kurt Wertz, Jr. But a double-play ground ball thwarted the threat, and the Otters took the lead immediately thereafter on an RBI groundout by Carlos Castro that made the score 1-0.
Brant Whiting followed with a two-out solo home run to double the lead to 2-0, which the score stayed until the sixth inning. After squandering a leadoff walk in the top of the inning, Evansville again scored runs right away in the bottom half, with the first four batters of the inning reaching base culminating in a two-run single by Taylor Lane to make it 5-0. The Otters' offense would not be held down the rest of the night, adding a single run in the seventh inning and four more in the eighth for the final margin of 10-0, the Miners' ninth shutout loss of the season.
The Miners will look to salvage the series finale on Thursday night, August 23rd, at 6:35 p.m. before returning home for their final home series of the season this coming weekend.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the Frontier League's winningest franchise since debuting in 2007, winning the 2012 Frontier League Championship as well as division titles in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
