Odessa Jackalopes News Release
Amarillo, Texas - Brennen Miller netted his first two goals as an Odessa Jackalope' (12-18-4) and Dean Shatzer was perfect between the pipes to earn Odessa's first shutout win of the year, 5-0, Friday night against the Amarillo Bulls at Amarillo (8-26-3) Civic Center. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Jacks and moved Odessa to 4-1-1 against the Bulls on the year.
Shatzer's (5-10-3) 37 saves earned the Dartmouth commit his first win since Nov. 22 (vs. AMA) and his first shutout of his NAHL career. While Shatzer was tremendous in the victory, Odessa defensively was just as strong, throwing limbs in front of pucks and ended the night 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
In the first, the Odessa Jackalopes outshot the Amarillo Bulls 18-to-10 but had nothing to show for it until Hampus Sjodahl (18) and Brennen Miller (1) lit the lamp with less than a minute to go in the first. First, Sjodahl centered a pass to Derek Brown that was blocked by Anton Martinsson, but the Swedish forward followed up the pass and deposited a spinning wrister from point-blank range over the left shoulder of Martinsson at 19:14. Pierce Pluemer then collected a loose puck right off an offensive-zone draw and centered it to Miller who sniped it through the five hole to make it 2-0 at 19:40.
Zach Zech (11) didn't wait to add on to the Jacks lead in the second when he ripped a sharp-angle feed from Ryan MacKellar over the near shoulder of Martinsson at 3:57. Miller then netted his second with a tow-drag laser from the top of the near circle as he entered the offensive zone on a 3-on-2 to make it 4-0 at 3:57. Odessa ended the period outshot 15-to-11 but 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
In the final frame, Odessa sat on its 4-0 lead until Gray Marr (10) snuck home a Brown feed at 19:42 to secure the 5-0 win. The losing goaltender, Martinsson (8-21-3) made 39 saves on 44 shots in the defeat.
The Jacks wrap up the final game of the two-game set at ACC Saturday night at 7:05 PM. Odessa returns home on Jan. 29-30 for two games against the Lone Star Brahmas.
In 2015-16, the Odessa Jackalopes will embark upon their fifth season in the North American Hockey League and 19th in the Permian Basin. Season tickets are on sale now!
