Mill Rats Win Home Opener 110-103

(Saint John, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats built a 17-point lead in the first half and held on to win their home opener, 110-103, over the Halifax Hurricanes.
The first quarter saw Saint John jump out to a 13-point lead with it's defense holding the Hurricanes to just 12 points.
In the second quarter, the Mill Rats extended the lead to 38-21 before Halifax clawed its way back to an 11-point deficit. Saint John went cold from behind the arc in the first half, shooting just 3-17 but still managed a 49-35 lead at the break.
In the third quarter Halifax's relentless interior attack began to cause Saint John problems. The Hurricanes came within 90-80.
In the final stanza the lead shrank to as small as three before point guard Doug Herring's two back-to-back tough slashing drives to the hoop, followed by a Ricky Volcy trey, built the lead back to ten.
"It's a great win on a night when our perimeter shots weren't falling like yesterday," said Mill Rats Head Coach Rob Spon. "Our leaders gutted it out and never panicked when the game got tight."
Doug Herring led the Mill Rats in scoring with 24, Gabe Freeman had 21 points and 13, Anthony Anderson 17, Ricky Volcy 15, and Corey Allmond 13. Al Stewart chipped in 8 points and 2 steals.
Kyle Hunt led Halifax with 27 points.
Saint John hosts the Moncton Miracles on Wednesday December 30th at 7PM at Harbour Station.
