Saint John Riptide News Release

(Saint John, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats posted a huge 46-26 third quarter which spurred them on to a 116-111 road win over the Orangeville A's on Saturday night.

The Mill Rats have won 3 in a row of late, and all of them on the road. They face the two-time defending NBL Canada champion Windsor Express today at 2PM EST. The live stream link is: https://youtu.be/evy607YltcE?list=PLRT8hQ0lUpzlHvh-rJgERCJiFT5IdVfcP

"I'm proud of the guys when we got down by 13 at the half we didn't quit," said Mill Rats Head Coach Rob Spon. "Instead we responded and came out with a huge third quarter and got the win."

The game kicked off with a quick scoring run by the Orangeville A's, who took a 7-0 lead at the 9:17 mark of the first quarter. Both squads struggled with inefficiency in the first, seeing Orangeville shoot 31% from the field while Saint John only went 40% respectively. Despite the sluggish start, the Mill Rats led 26-21 after one.

The Mill Rats lead 33-29 in the second quarter when the A's went on a 19-2 run to take a 48-35 lead. At the 1:14 mark of the 2nd quarter, A's guard Dominic Cheek gifted an easy alley-oop pass to Flen Whitfield, who threw down a one-handed dunk over the Mill Rat's defence, stretching the A's lead to 15 points. The 1st half would finish with a 52-39 Orangeville leading.

The Mill Rats took over the game in the third, going on a 27-6 scoring run to open up the quarter. The A's could not find a way to slow down Mill Rats forward Gabe Freeman, who put up 12 of his 23 points during the 3rd quarter alone. After outscoring the A's 46-26 in the 3rd quarter, the Mill Rats led 85-78.

Both squads fought hard in the 4th quarter, seeing the A's come within only 3 points at the 1:16 mark of the 4th, down 109-106 to the Mill Rats. The A's were unable to close the deficit in the late moments of the game, before eventually falling to the Mill Rats 116-111 after 48 minutes.

Doug Herring Jr led the Mill Rats with 26 points, Freeman 23, Anthony Anderson 18, Johnny Mayhane 16, and Chris Smith 13. Flen Whitfield led the A's with 22.

The Mill Rats improve to 17-10 on the season while the Storm drops to 8-19.

The Mill Rats are 3-0 on the current road trip. They face Windsor today before returning home to face the Moncton Miracles at home on March 23rd.
