(Saint John, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats built a 23 point lead in Halifax, but had to fend over a furious Rainmen rally to win 109-102 at the Scotiabank Centre.

"Our bench really sparked us tonight when adversity struck and Levett and Johnson were huge. Crookshank gave us a solid 12 rebounds. Everybody contributed to this win," said Mill Rats Head Coach Julian King.

After Anthony Anderson went down with an injury in the first quarter, Tyrone Levett came off the Mill Rats bench to spark a 56-38 lead at the half. The Mill Rats also got a huge lift off the bench from newly acquired guard, Alex Johnson, who filled in ball handling duties in place of Anderson.

The Mill Rats still led 83-63 heading into the fourth quarter, and 92-75 before the Rainmen's huge rally. Halifax ran off a 21-2 run with the crowd going crazy and took a 96-94 lead with 2:38 left on Sefton Barrett's layup.

Raheem Singleton drew the foul and nailed two free throws and then Johnny Mayhane hit a tough step back jumper to restore the lead for Saint John, 98-96. Singleton missed his next layup but caromed the rebound and drew the foul, hitting both for a 100-96 lead.

After a Rainmen score, Mayhane hit a three from the corner to push the lead out to 103-98 with 32 seconds left. Free throws and a couple meaningless baskets as time expired accounted for the final margin.

Tyrone Levett led Saint John with 26 points, Alex Johnson and Johnny Mayhane had 17 each, Singleton 14, Williams 11, and Crookshank 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Mill Rats improve to 7-11 on the season while the Rainmen drop to 7-7. The next game is at Harbour Station on Thursday January 8th at 7pm against the Island Storm.
