(Charlottetown, PEI) The Saint John Mill Rats denied the Island Storm another chance to clinch the division title by beating them 115-99 in Charlottetown.
Saint John started strong building a 32-23 lead, capped off with by a Ricky Volcy steal and layup to beat the quarter buzzer. In the second quarter the Island Storm mounted a rally and cut their deficit to 50-55 at the half.
When the second half began the Mill Rats defense really imposed its will. Defenders swarmed the paint and challenged everything, turning defense into offense with steals and transition play. Anthony Anderson got hot to close the quarter knocking down 3 three pointers and converting a driving layup and drawing the foul. The result was a massive 99-71 lead at the end of the quarter. The fourth quarter the outcome was never in doubt.
"This was a great win at the right time of year against at very good team that is well coached," said Mill Rats Head Coach Julian King. "We can't worry about who we play in the playoffs, our goal is just to win each game that we play one at a time."
Anthony Anderson led all scorers with 30 points, Johnny Mayhane scored 19, Kenny Jones 17, Tyrone Levett 14, and Ricky Volcy 12. Nick Evans led the Island with 24.
With the win the Mill Rats improve to 16-14 on the season, winners of 9 of the last 10 games. The Island Storm falls to 19-11, just a notch ahead of the Halifax Rainmen who are 19-12. The Mill Rats will face either the Island Storm or the Halifax Rainmen in the first round of the playoffs.
Saint John heads to play the Moncton Miracles tomorrow night in Moncton in a weather makeup game, before returning home for the regular season finale on Thursday February 28th at 7PM at Harbour Station against the London Lightning.
