January 15, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
New York Power News Release
New York, NY - U.S. Women's National Team head coach April Heinrichs has named the 20 players who will travel to China tomorrow to participate in the Four Nations Tournament, running from Jan. 23-29 and featuring the top four women's teams in the world in the USA, Norway, Germany and China. All four have qualified for the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup being held Sept. 23-Oct. 11 in China.
Milbrett, who tied a U.S. record with five goals in a match against Panama at the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup last November, is just five goals away from hitting the magical 100-goal mark, an achievement previously reached by just four players in international soccer history, two of them Americans (Mia Hamm and Michelle Akers) and two Italians (Carolina Morace and Elisabetta Vignotto).
Pearce, a starter in the 2000 Olympics has 91 caps, but has not played for the USA since July 3, 2001, after suffering an ACL injury at the end of the 2001 WUSA season. She played and started in 19 games for the New York Power in the 2002 season and remains the only player from a small soccer school (Monmouth University in N.J.) to achieve success with the U.S. Women's National Team.
This will be the third appearance at the Four Nations Tournament in China for the U.S. women, who also participated in 1998 and last year. In 1998, the USA won the tournament, defeating Sweden 3-0, tying China 0-0 and beating Norway 3-0. In 2002, the USA let in just one goal in the tournament, but finished third after losing to Norway, 1-0, tying Germany 0-0 and defeating China, 2-0.
U.S. Women's National Team Schedule:
Jan. 23 vs. Norway in China (Four Nations Tournament)
Jan. 26 vs. China in China (Four Nations Tournament)
Jan. 29 vs. Germany in China (Four Nations Tournament)
