
3 CyberRays on U.S. team for World Cup tune-up in China

SAN JOSE (Jan. 15, 2003) â San Jose CyberRays LaKeysia Beene, Thori Bryan and Brandi Chastain have been named to the United States team for the Four Nations Tournament beginning next week in China, a tune-up event for the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup.
All three players are national team veterans, and Bryan and Chastain have represented the United States in previous World Cups. They are among 20 players named to the team by U.S. coach April Heinrichs to face Norway, Germany and host China in the three-game tournament. The team flies to China on Thursday and will open the tournament against Norway on Jan. 23 in Yiwu, China.
Beene, the 2001 WUSA goalkeeper of the year, is the women's professional league's all-time shutout leader, and she was the No.1 U.S. keeper for most of 2002. Bryan, a defender, played for the United States in the 1995 World Cup in Sweden and was an alternate for the 1996 Olympic team. Chastain played for the United States in the 2001 World Cup in China â the first women's world championship â the 1999 World Cup in the United States, and on both the 1996 and 2000 Olympic teams.
After opening against Norway, the reigning Olympic champion, the United States plays China in Wuhan, China on Jan. 26 and then closes against Germany on Jan. 29 in Shanghai. The stadiums in Wuhan and Shanghai will be used again when the United States returns for the Sept. 23-Oct. 11 World Cup to defend the title it won against China in the Rose Bowl in 1999.
The CyberRays will open preseason training March 1 and open their 2003 season at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 5 against the Philadelphia Charge in Spartan Stadium.
