Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. - Quad City Mallards goaltender Steve Michalek has been recalled by the American Hockey League's Iowa Wild, the Mallards announced today.
Michalek, 22, returns to Iowa after making 37 saves last night on the way to his seconds shutout of the season as the Mallards defeated the Rapid City Rush 4-0. Michalek is tied for sixth in the ECHL in save percentage (.924) and has posted a 2.42 goals against average while going 12-8-4 in 24 games with the Mallards. Michalek was named ECHL Rookie of the Month for October and ECHL Goaltender of the Week for the period ending November 22.
Michalek joins Iowa for the third time in just over two weeks. Last Saturday he stopped 32 shots while backstopping the Wild to a 5-1 win over the Charlotte Checkers in his AHL debut.
Michalek was first assigned to the Mallards by Iowa on October 8. The 6' 2", 196-pound Hartford, Connecticut native turned pro this season after completing his college career at Harvard last year. Michalek last season went 21-13-3 with a 2.28 goals against average, a .924 save percentage and three shutouts and set a school record by playing in each of Harvard's 37 games while helping the Crimson to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship title and a berth in NCAA tournament. Over the course of his college career, Michalek went 33-28-13 while posting a 2.59 goals against average, a .914 save percentage and five shutouts in 79 games. He made the 2011-12 All-Ivy League Second Team after going 7-7-8 in 24 games and turning in a 3.19 goals against average and a .894 save percentage as a freshman.
Michalek was chosen by the Minnesota Wild in the sixth round of the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft with the one hundred sixty-first overall selection. He spent part of the 2012-13 season with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the junior United States Hockey League before returning to Harvard. Michalek went 7-6-3 with a 3.09 goals against average and a .900 save percentage in 17 USHL games.
