April 24, 2009- Miami FL Miami FC baptized their new stadium with a 2-1 victory over the Montreal Impact. After winning their opening game at their Broward home, Lockhart Stadium, Miami FC won their first game at FIU stadium. The Blues were lead once again by Colombian forward Diego Serna. This time Serna contributed with one goal and one assist helping the Blues to their first ever undefeated start.
"I am very happy with the players, with the work they put in the last twenty days, for this team to come out and win their first games is very impressive. It's like the Miami FC jersey is their second skin" said head coach Zinho
FIU athletics and County Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz were honored before the game. Miami FC presented Athletic Director Pete Garcia and Commissioner Diaz with Miami FC jersey and inaugurated the game with the ceremonial first kick.
The first half showed to be an even match up with most of the action being played in the midfield. The Impact had the first real opportunity of danger after a Sebrengo header was saved by Goal keeper Pat Hannigan. Pat Hannigan was not done, he also blocked a penalty kick in the 58th minute, which proved to be the turning point of the match.
The first goal came in the 48th minute after a foul was committed on Allen Marcina inside the box, Serna finished the penalty kick by putting the ball on the bottom left corner.
Diego was not done, seven minutes later he then found himself in the small box and crossed a ball to a running Leo Inacio who finished calmly scoring his second goal of the season.
Montreal would react in the 75th minute, Joey Gertsen received a pass from Rocco Plancentino and finished silencing the crowd of over 1500 people. Montreal would keep attacking and three minutes later almost found the equalizer but the Miami defense would clear the ball off the line.
Game Notes- John Pulido founding himself playing again at FIU stadium, Pulido was a starter for the Golden Panthers... This was the first official soccer match played at FIU stadium.... Diego Serna will not play the next game at Rochester Sunday April 26 after receiving two yellow cards.... This is the first time Miami FC has beat the Montreal Impact.
