Miami, FL. June 15, 2009 - Miami FC will host the USL leader, the Charleston Battery, for the second round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup; kick-off will be at 8 pm at Tropical Park with free admission to the public. The Blues earned their second round berth after beating Lynch's FC 2-1 at Tropical Park last Tuesday. The winner of this match will face Major League Soccer's Chivas USA at home on Tuesday, June 30th.
The Blues started the month of June with a noteworthy performance. Last week, they beat a scrappy Lynch's FC 2-1 for the first round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. On June 12th, the team traveled to Vancouver and lost on a controversial header. On Sunday night however, the team brought the excitement back by beating the Austin Aztex 2-0. Serna scored his 4th goal of the season, and Paulo Jr. grabbed his first assist of the season.
The Battery beat Atlanta FC in the opening round of the US Open Cup at Blackbaud Stadium. Both, Randi Patterson and Tsuyoshi Yoshitake, scored for Charleston in a match that featured four ejections including Atlanta FC's Head Coach, Ricardo Montoya. Charleston is still undefeated in USL action; their last match ended with a 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers. Last season, they went on a remarkable run in the 2008 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup advancing to the Championship game. The Battery played against DC United and lost 2-1.
"I think the team is finally taking its form. We put the group together at the last minute, but over the last three games, we have seen what they are capable of. Even though Charleston is the best team in the USL right now, I feel confident that we can advance to the next round," said General Manager, Luiz Muzzi.
