MIAMI, Fla. -  In their U.S. Open Cup debut, the Miami FC fell to the Wilmington Hammerheads 2-1 in the third round of the tournament on Wednesday night. Chavez scored his first goal in a Miami FC uniform as his team took a one-game break from National American Soccer League action.

Forward Jeff Michaud picked up the first goal of the game for the Hammerheads. In the second minute of the game, the West Palm Beach native, managed to get behind goalkeeper David Sierra from five feet outside the box. The Hammerheads went up 2-0 two minutes later thanks to a Justin Moose goal in the fourth minute.

The Miami FC would recover and regain control through the rest of the first half. They would not be able to find a goal, however, and went into halftime down two scores.

The Miami FC was almost able to complete a comeback thanks to a valiant effort from Chavez.

The 28 year-old striker began the second half with a decent chance in the 50th minute, but his shot was too strong and flew above the goal. He would receive a golden opportunity at midfield two minutes later as he streaked past Wilmington's defense to go one-on-one with goalkeeper Eric Ati. Chavez easily lobbed it over the goalie to secure the first goal of his Miami FC career and cut the Hammerheads' lead to 2-1.

The match became more intense as the Miami FC looked for an equalizer. Defender Tom Parratt was issued a yellow card in the 63rd minute after fouling midfielder Blake Smith. Midfielder Michael Lahoud also received a yellow card in the 64th minute.

Chavez came close to scoring again in the 80th minute, but drew a penalty after being tackled by Ati in the box.

Cvitanich stepped up to take the penalty in the 81st minute. The veteran fired a low-lying shot to the left, but Ati made a full-stretch save.

Although the defense held strong through the rest of the match - they allowed only one shot on target through the last 86 minutes of the match - the offense was not able to find an equalizer. The Miami FC dropped the match 2-1.

The Miami FC will resume its NASL schedule on Saturday night when they host the Indy Eleven at 8 p.m.
