Fort Lauderdale Strikers News Release

Miami, May 18, 2008 - Miami FC and Portland Timbers battled it out in a goalless draw at Tropical Park. Miami FC came from 1-0 defeat at home to Vancouver. Portland saw its lead at the table be overturned by the Charleston Battery this weekend as they now have tied their last 4 matches.

The first half was plagued with long balls from both sides with very little dangerous occasions. Barrett could not latch on to a cross in the 14th minute to make the Portland keep work.

The first half was plagued with long balls from both sides with very little dangerous occasions. Barrett could not latch on to a cross in the 14th minute to make the Portland keep work.

Portland had few chances but Gregor and Brown managed to give Miami defenders Eduardo Gutierrez and Cristiano Dias some headaches. Sean Fraser could have scored in stoppage time but his shot sailed over the crossbar. Moments later, Gregor narrowly missed with his shot cruising by the near post.

Both coaching staffs definitely motivated their players and the second half produced more daring moments. Walter Ramirez's free kick took a nasty deflection that almost skipped past Portland keeper.

In the 63rd minute an inspired Eric Vasquez escaped his marker and blasted a shot that Portland keeper parried. Walter Ramirez initiated a play all the way from the backfield and battled his way past the half-line to free up Alex Afonso. The Brazilian's cross almost connected with fellow striker Fraser.

Portland dodged a bullet and Miami kept the heat as Vasquez did well to control midfield traffic and create plays.

The Timbers almost grabbed 3 points in stoppage time after Olum's deflection found Knowles in close range who then later fired above the crossbar.

Miami FC's next match is at the Minnesota Thunder on Sunday May 24 at 8:35pm and then the Blues play again against the Portland Timbers on Monday, May 26, at 5pm, in Portland.
