Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va. -He was originally penciled in as Potomac's fifth starter on Opening Day, but right-hander Brad Meyers now sits atop the Carolina League mountain after being named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for May 4-May 10. The 23-year-old hurler out of Yorba Linda, California becomes the first P-Nat this season to be honored with a weekly reward presented by Carolina League President John Hopkins.
Meyers was sensational in his only start of the week as he continues his dominance over Carolina League hitters in his second stint with the P-Nats. He twirled a seven-inning gem against the Wilmington Blue Rocks scattering just three singles and matched a career-high by tallying eight strikeouts in Potomac's 1-0 victory last Thursday. With his mastery on the mound against Wilmington, Meyers upped his team-leading scoreless innings streak to an astounding 20.2 and currently leads the Carolina League with a 1.16 earned run average.
Meyers was a 5th round selection by the Nationals' organization in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft out of Loyola Marymount University. The 6'6" righty led the Lions with a 3.46 ERA and struck out 85 batters in his final collegiate season prior to signing with Washington. Meyers began his professional career tossing 24.0 scoreless innings between the Gulf Coast League Nationals and Single-A Hagerstown Suns in 2007. He spent the entire 2008 campaign pitching for Hagerstown where he went 9-7 with a 4.79 ERA with 94 strikeouts in 107.0 innings pitched under the tutelage of new Potomac pitching coach Paul Menhart. With the Suns, he garnered the Hagerstown Player of the Month honors last June after posting a 1.80 ERA in six starts.
Through 30 games this year, Meyers (3-0) remains undefeated for Trent Jewett's ballclub and has not allowed an earned run in his last three starts. He has only walked four batters compared to 24 strikeouts in his 31.0 innings of work and the P-Nats have not lost in any of the five games in which Meyers has appeared.
The Potomac Nationals will begin a three-game midweek homestand against the Salem Red Sox on Tuesday, May 12 with a Business Persons' Special beginning at 11:00 a.m. It will also be a Salute to Service Tuesday where all military, first responders and teachers can receive a free grandstand ticket from the ticket office with a valid form of identification. It's also the first Kraft Singles Tuesday where for every Tuesday home game, fans can receive a buy 1, get 1 free ticket promotion when they present any Kraft Singles cheese wrappers to the ticket office.
