Pelicans Snap Skid, Avoid Sweep

May 11, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

KINSTON, N.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans put together a complete effort and did something they hadn't done in over a week: won.

The Pelicans held a potent Kinston Indians lineup in check, allowing just a single tally on a Lonnie Chisenhall home run, in a 5-1 victory to salvage the series finale of a three-game set. The win snapped a season-high seven game losing streak and gave the Pelicans their first win in six tries on their current road trip.

Pelicans left fielder Cody Johnson paced his club's offense, accounting for all five runs by slugging a pair of home runs to put his Carolina League-leading total at 11. Johnson's first shot, a three-run jack, put the Birds on the board first in the top of the third. After two straight outs to start the inning, Jason Heyward singled to right and was followed by a Freddie Freeman walk. Johnson crushed his three-run homer to center field to put the Pelicans on top 3-0.

Myrtle Beach starter Cole Rohrbough, making his first start since being activated from the disabled list, threw four innings and stymied a Kinston team that had taken the first two games of the series. Rohrbough allowed Kinston's only run on Chisenhall's longball in the bottom of the fourth. Converted starter Jose Ortegano (4-3) picked up the win in relief, tossing two-and-two-thirds scoreless innings while allowing three hits.

The Pelicans got Kinston's run back and added another for good measure when Johnson crushed his second of the afternoon over the center field wall on an 0-2 pitch to put Myrtle Beach in front 5-1 in the fifth. The 2006 first round draft pick's performance was the first multi-homer game for a Pelican this year. All five Pelicans runs and all nine hits came against Kinston starter Ryan Morris (1-4).

The Pelicans open their final series of a season long eleven game road trip visiting the Frederick Keys for the first of a four-game set tomorrow night. Myrtle Beach returns home Friday night for the series opener of three with the Potomac Nationals. Tickets are available by calling the Pelicans box office at 843-918-6000 or by visiting the tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
