St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The St. Lucie Mets continue to pile up the wins, as they slipped by the Bradenton Marauders 3-2 on Independence Day at First Data Field.
The Mets won their third game in a row and claimed their sixth win in their last seven games. It's their best stretch of the season. The victory pushed St. Lucie to 6-6 in the second half.
Anthony Kay, one of New York's first round picks from the 2016 draft, made his St. Lucie debut and got the win. Kay pitched a career-high 7.1 innings. He scattered seven hits, allowed two runs and struck out four. Kay was perfect through the first 4.1 innings.
Austin McGeorge inherited a bases loaded jam with one out in the eighth and got a pop out and strikeout to keep the Mets up 3-2. McGeorge also worked a scoreless ninth for his first save of the year.
The Mets offense provided just enough run support again. Leadoff hitter Gene Cone went 2 for 3 with a double, RBI and a run. He crushed a one-out RBI ground rule double in the seventh inning to bring in Dan Rizzie and break a 2-2 tie.
Rizzie went 2 for 3 with two singles.
Bradenton starter Mike Wallace pitched a quality start. He gave up three runs in 6.1 innings. He was perfect through the first three innings.
The Mets took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on a RBI double by Mike Paez and a run-scoring hit from Dash Winningham.
Bradenton tied the game in the fourth. Jason Delay and Brett Pope hit back-to-back RBI singles.
Kay was able to get out of trouble in the fifth and sixth innings by picking off runners at first base.
The Mets (6-6, 33-46) and Marauders (4-9, 39-39) wrap up their two-game series at First Data Field on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
