Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - A slump has officially fallen over the Charlotte Stone Crabs.
The Crabs' mighty pitching was knocked around for a second straight night, allowing nine hits and seven walks in a 7-1 loss to the Mets at Charlotte Sports Park on Wednesday night. Charlotte has now lost four games in a row for the first time this year.
In front of a rollicking $2 Wednesday crowd, the Stone Crabs just couldn't bring in key runners early in the game. Charlotte left five runners on base through the first four innings against Mets starter Chris Flexen, all of them in scoring position. Flexen (1-3) later settled down to throw seven-and-two-thirds innings of one-run ball, scattering six hits and striking out four.
The Stone Crabs picked up their one run in the fourth. Down 2-0, Alec Sole slapped a two-out single into right. Sole finished the night 2-for-4, making him an astonishing 12-for-23 this year against the Mets. Cade Gotta followed with another single to push Sole to third, and Jace Conrad lined a base hit into right to score Sole and cut the Mets lead to 2-1.
St. Lucie got on the board first against Stone Crabs starter Chris Pike (0-2). With two on and one out in the third, Mets top prospect Amed Rosario laced a single into the outfield to score Champ Stuart and put St. Lucie on the board. Michael Katz followed with a sacrifice fly to score Luis Guillorme and make it 2-0.
The game stayed close into the fifth, when Pike walked Jhoan Urena to lead off the inning. Stuart came up and muscled a ball deep into right that carried just over Gotta's outstretched glove and into the Charlotte bullpen for a two-run homer. It was Stuart's second home run of the season.
The Mets broke the game open late for the second straight night, scoring three in the seventh. Knuckleballer Jeff Howell was terrific for two innings, but lost control of the mercurial pitch in his third, sending Tomas Nido to first on a strikeout wild pitch and walking Urena. Stuart flew out, but a wild pitch moved the runners up a bag and Howell walked Guillorme to bring up Rosario. The Mets shortstop came through again, ripping a two-run single to the wall in right. A passed ball scored the seventh run. Rosario is 5-for-9 with a home run, a triple, and seven RBI through his first two games of the series.
The Stone Crabs send ace RHP Brent Honeywell (1-0, 0.73) to the mound to avoid the sweep on Thirsty Thursday tomorrow night, featuring $2 drafts and $3 bottles of ice cold beer. The Mets counter with RHP Corey Oswalt (1-0, 3.14). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35. For tickets, visit stonecrabsbaseball.com, call 941-206-HITS, or stop by the FCB Box Office anytime from 10 a.m. through the game.
