Greenville Drive News Release

We welcome Manager Jack Lind, who will be working his 32nd year in professional baseball. In the Giants organization last season, Lind led the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (43-33) to the Northwest League Championship Series. His previous Minor League managerial experience includes three league championships in six seasons (1983-1988). Lind has spent two stints at the Major League level: first as an infielder for the Milwaukee Brewers in 1974 & 1975, later as third base coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1997-2000. He finished his playing career with the Yomiuri Giants in 1977, giving him the unusual distinction of being one of only two players to be teammates with home run kings Hank Aaron and Saduharu Oh (the other is Davey Johnson). Lind, 58, is married (Gayle) with two sons (Stephen and Zach) and calls Mesa, AZ, home.

2. FORMER GAMECOCK HOLLINS JOINS AS HITTING COACH

Hitting Coach Dave Hollins returns to Columbia as a familiar figure to baseball fans in the area. Hollins lettered at the University of South Carolina from 1985-87 and still holds three USC career marks for switch-hitters (HR: 31, RBI: 138, BB: 114). He made his Major League debut in 1990 for the Phillies and logged a dozen seasons in the big-leagues with seven different teams. Hollins' best year came with Philadelphia's National League Championship season in 1993: he played in the All-Star Game (doubling in his only at-bat) and notched ten post-season hits in the Phillies' push to the World Series. His final Major League stop in 2002 was again with Philadelphia. After starting the 2003 season in Triple-A, Hollins announced his retirement in May of last year. Hollins, 37, hails from the Buffalo, NY, area.

3. SALLYING FORTH IN THE SOUTH ATLANTIC LEAGUE

A couple things to point out regarding the South Atlantic League schedule for this season...one is the divisional switch for Greensboro and Hickory. Last year the Bombers dueled with Hickory for the Southern Division and Capital City faced off against the Crawdads on several occasions, only meeting the Northern Division Greensboro Bats for one series. This year the Bombers will meet Greensboro multiple times while only facing Hickory in one series. Confused? Don't be—it's part of an effort to share the travel burden of the geographically diverse SAL by rotating the teams into different divisions. The second thing to note is that the South Georgia Waves will sport a new name this year (unless something changes at the last minute). Get ready for...the Columbus Catfish. Good name, good logo, and hopefully a thread of stability for a team that started as the Wilmington Waves, moved to Albany (GA) as the South Georgia Waves, kept the name and moved to Columbus, became the subject of additional moving rumors, then finally settled on Catfish. Tartar sauce, anyone?

4. YEAH, THAT'S THE TICKET!

While single-game sales will not be available for a bit longer, ticket packages are available right now. Season tickets come to just $300 per box seat for all 70 games (complete with the "never a wasted ticket" policy that allows you to redeem unused tickets for additional seats). Twelve packs get you a set of the biggest promotional nights for only $66 per box seat (and offer the "never a wasted ticket" benefit as well). We also offer coupon books containing 20 undated general admission tickets (to be exchanged at the box office) for merely $50 per book. Contact the Bombers office at 803-256-4110 or info@bomberball.com for more ticket details. IMPORTANT NOTE FOR TICKET HOLDERS WHO HAVE NOT YET RENEWED FOR 2004: your seats will be considered as "released" if you have not renewed on or before FEBRUARY 16th. You can still purchase after that date, of course, but we can no longer guarantee the same seating location at that point.

5. HE'S A BOOSTER, SHE'S A BOOSTER, WOULDN'T YOU LIKE TO BE A BOOSTER TOO?

Show your extra support for Bomberball 2004 by joining forces with the Capital City Bombers Booster Club. This group gets together to share their love of minor league baseball and to rally behind the players who make Columbia their summer home. Among other ballpark activities, the Boosters award prizes to the team's best performers and feed the team with a delicious home-cooked meal after several games. Our Boosters are the best friends of Bombers Baseball, and they're always looking for more friends to share the fun. For more information regarding the Booster Club, please e-mail info@bomberball.com and we will get you in touch with the club officers.

6. SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT: STEAK'N SHAKE

The Bombers are proud to welcome team partner Colonial back to the ballpark, including sponsorship of our Junior Bombers Club. Remember: Colonial, For What Happens Next. Moving on now to our Spotlight for this issue of Bombshells: Steak'n Shake, located on Columbiana Drive (behind Columbiana Centre mall). Naturally "Famous for Steakburgers" and creamy milkshakes, the name says a lot—but it doesn't say everything. Steak'n Shake is OPEN 24 HOURS and offers a full menu of tasty treats, including breakfast items, delicious chili, and much more. Whether you're hungry at 3am, looking for a bite after shopping, or simply picking a good lunch stop, think about Steak'n Shake (also with take-out and drive-thru).

7. NOTABLE QUOTABLE

In the spirit of the primaries and the political chase, Bombshells offers this simple quote... "I don't know a lot about politics, but I know a lot about baseball." -- Richard Nixon

8. BOMBSHELLS MISCELLANY

A few things are still out there, as alluded to in the last edition: some advertising spaces remain available, the website renovation continues, and the baseball history book is being assembled (Mark B. welcomes all help). And while we are happy to point out our new manager and hitting coach, we do not yet have names for our pitching coach or trainer...stay tuned. The 2004 season is only 73 days away as I write this—the pace of preparations is picking up rapidly and that time will go faster than you know. Get ready!
