Mets hold off Miracle 3-1 Sergakis goes 2 for 3 with home run

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Five St. Lucie pitchers stifled Fort Myers as the Mets held on for a 3-1 win over the Miracle on Friday at First Data Field.

Kevin Canelon started for the Mets and limited the Miracle to two hits over 4.2 innings. Johnny Magliozzi got out of two big jams and recorded the final four outs of the game to earn his second save.

The Miracle only recorded four hits, two of which came from Chris Paul. The Miracle popped out to the Mets infield eight times. Fort Myers had its chances. Mets pitchers walked or plunked eight batters, but the Miracle stranded 11 on base and went 0 for 12 with runners in scoring position.

The Mets scored their first run in the first inning. Patrick Mazeika started a two-out rally with a single and he would later score on Jeff Diehl's single.

Nick Sergakis led off the second inning with a home run to center field to make it 2-0.

In the fourth inning, Vinny Siena doubled, went to third base on a wild pitch and scored on Dan Rizzie's sac fly.

The Miracle loaded the bases in the eighth inning on two walks and hit batter. Magliozzi came in and struck out Sean Miller to get out of the jam. In the ninth the Miracle put two runners on with one out but Magliozzi got Chris Paul and Sean Kennedy to pop out.

Sergakis went 2 for 3 and added a double. Mazeika's hit extended his hitting streak to nine games.

Craig Missigman tossed 1.1 scoreless innings to pick up the win.

The Mets won their third straight home game.

The Mets (12-17) and Miracle (13-16) play the middle game of their series on Saturday. It's Star Wars Night at First Data Field. The Mets will wear special jerseys that will be auctioned off at www.stluciemets.milbauctions.com. First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
