Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Fort Myers Miracle (13-16) dropped the first game of a three-game set, 3-1, on Friday night against the St. Lucie Mets (12-17). The Miracle put the tying run on in the eighth and ninth innings, but could not bring him home.
LHP Lachlan Wells (L, 1-4) lasted four innings in his start for Fort Myers. After retiring the first two batters in the first, Wells allowed a single and a walk before Jeff Diehl started the scoring with a knock to left. The bottom of the second began with a solo home run to dead center off the bat of Nick Sergakis. St. Lucie added one more against Wells in the fourth with a Dan Rizzie sacrifice fly.
The Miracle offense found opportunities to score, but wound up 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position. The lone run came after Sean Miller led off the seventh with the hardest hit ball of the night, a double. After advancing to third on a Casey Scoggins groundout, Miller scored with Max Murphy batting on a wild pitch by Joshua Torres.
Down two in the eighth, the Miracle loaded the bases on two walks and a wild pitch, but RHP Johnny Magliozzi (S, 2) struck out Miller to end the inning. In the ninth, on another walk and HBP, the Miracle had the tying run at first with one out. Magliozzi induced pop ups of Chris Paul and Shane Kennedy to end the game.
Mets' starter LHP Kevin Canelon gave up two hits and three walks in 4.2, but had to turn the win over to RHP Craig Missigman (1-1) who tossed an inning and a third in relief. LHP Michael Theofanopoulos and RHP Nick Anderson hurled four scoreless innings of relief to keep the Miracle in the game.
The two teams play game two on Saturday night at 6:30 PM ET. RHP Chris Anderson faces RHP Justin Dunn.
