MESA, ARIZONA -The Mesa Miners (20-11) won their second straight game by beating the Japan Samurai Bears (9-21) 4-3 at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona.
Mesa got a run in the second inning with an RBI double by Michael Done. Done finished the game 3-for-4 and 1 RBI. Japan tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly by Kenichi Miura. The game stayed tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Miners broke the game open by scoring three runs. Starting pitcher Chris Marini helped his own cause with an RBI single. Matt Connolly hit a 2-run triple for the added insurance. Paul Powell ended his 10-game hitting streak by going 0-3.
Japan made the game a little more interesting by scoring twice off closer Kelly Johnson in the ninth inning, but Johnson finally shut them down for his seventh save of the season. Marini (4-0) pitched eight innings giving up one run on four hits. Losing pitcher for Japan was starter Satoshi Morita (1-4) who pitched seven innings giving up four runs on ten hits.
The Miners will play the Samurai Bears again tomorrow night at 6:35 pm and are looking for the series sweep before heading to San Diego. The scheduled starter for Mesa is Manny Ayala (4-2). You can follow the Miners by listening to Darrell Linderman and John Potter on www.sportsjuice.com.
