Mesa beats Japan, 7-4

MESA, ARIZONA -The Mesa Miners (19-11) returned from their 4-2 road trip by beating the Japan Samurai Bears (9-20) 7-4 at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona.

Japan got on the board early in the first inning with a 2-run home run by Tomoshi Aoki off Mesa starter Grant Williams. Mesa went on to tie the game at two with a solo home run by Michael Done and an RBI single by Adam Bonner. JApna took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning, but another RBI single by Bonner and an RBI single by Marcus Jensen gave the Mners the lead for good. Jensen finished the game with two RBI singles and Bonner went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI. Paul Powell continued his hot hitting by going 4-for-4 and extending his hit streak to ten games.

Williams (5-1) picked up the win by giving up three runs on eight hits in eight innings. Kelly Johnson pitched a scoreless ninth to record his sixth save of the season. Losing pitcher for Japan was starter Hideki Nagasaka (2-2).

The Miners will play the Samurai Bears again tomorrow night at 6:35 pm. Scheduled starters are Chris Marini (3-0) for Mesa and Satoshi Morita (1-3) for Japan. You can follow the Miners in Yuma by listening to Darrell Linderman and John Potter on www.sportsjuice.com.
