Meet Todd McCoy

February 10, 2011 - Premier Basketball League (PBL)
Rochester RazorSharks News Release

Back on January 11th, Rochester guard Todd McCoy scored 14 points in a home court win over Quebec. Nothing really special there. But it was one of the most important basketball games of McCoy's career. His mother, up from Philadelphia, was in the crowd that day. Watching her son play for the first time. Ever.

"With all that screaming and yelling, she enjoyed herself," said McCoy. "She thinks I'm pretty good, so that's a good thing."

McCoy didn't have a traditional upbringing.

"I finished high school living on my own," he said. "I went to college. I kept in contact, we just didn't live in the same house."

McCoy is very much a self made man. He beat the streets of North Philadelphia, became a Junior College All-American before playing at Indiana State. McCoy claims he's a better person for the experience.

"Look at me now," he says. "I made something of myself. I believe that experience made me the person I am today. There were more downs than ups and I believe those helped me out."

McCoy shares a common background with Coach Rod Baker, who some thirty years earlier, grew up in the same neighborhood.

"We don't necessarily have similar backgrounds," says Baker. "But I understand where he's been and what he's done. And so that sort of helps."

"We were in Canada and the Flyers were on ESPN and there were eight fights in one game," said McCoy. "We were going back and forth about that. Only in Philadelphia. We have some similarities from back home."

Included among McCoy's other career highlights is a season he spent playing basketball in Jerusalem.

"So many people visit from around the world," he said. "There's people from everywhere. It's crazy."

A devoutly religious man, McCoy enjoyed the historical significance of the Holy City where Jesus Christ was crucified some 2000 years ago. He took the tours and saw the sights.

"I actually touched where they laid him in the tomb," said McCoy. "They still have that there. It's a brick. It's like concrete on the ground. They replaced everything around it, but it's the one concrete on the ground where he actually stood. It was like electricity went through my body when I touched it."

McCoy found himself without a place to play this summer. He tried out for Coach Baker and then won a job in training camp. He has scored ten or more points off the bench in seven of the RazorSharks eight games so far. Not surprisingly, Baker claims McCoy's primary asset is his toughness.

Rochester hosts Kentucky at the Blue Cross Arena Saturday. Tip off at 1:05.
