McMillan, Aduba Rejoin Flock

August 4, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release

MOLINE, Ill. (August 4, 2010) - The Quad City Mallards of the "AA" Central Hockey League announced today that they have signed defenseman Darren McMillan and re-signed left wing Obi Aduba for the 2010-11 season. Per club policy, no contract terms were announced.

McMillan, 30, picked up three assists in a dozen games for the Mallards last season before signing with Klostersee EHC in Germany last November. McMillan scored four goals and totaled 22 points in 26 games in the German Oberliga last year.

"Darren is a quality defensive defenseman who can assist on the second power play unit. The fact that we understood his desire to go to Germany last year is the reason he felt comfortable coming back to us when he wanted to return to the CHL," said Mallards Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Frank Anzalone. "He provides a little of everything including an element of grit and an element of defensive discipline. A stable defenseman like Darren is an asset to any team and its goaltending."

McMillan last played a full season in North America in 2008-09 when he skated in 73 games and recorded one goal and ten points while helping the Ontario (California) Reign to the ECHL's Pacific Division title.

Last season was the second McMillan spent in Germany. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, native first played for Klostersee in 2007-08.

McMillan rejoins the Mallards as the club approaches its first CHL season. The campaign will mark the 6' 0", 209-pound McMillan's return to the league in which he saw his first pro action. He broke in with the Wichita Thunder in 2005-06 and played again for Wichita the following season.

Over his first five pro seasons, McMillan has scored 19 goals and produced 113 points in 270 games.

Before stepping into the pro ranks McMillan played for St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia for four seasons. He won the Atlantic University Sport conference title with StFX in 2003-04. In the junior ranks, he was a three-year player for the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League from 1998-2001. McMillan and the Otters won back-to-back OHL Midwest Division championships in 1999-2000 and 2000-01 and also finished the regular season first overall in the OHL in 2000-01.

Aduba, 26, returns for a second season with the Mallards. Last year the Medfield, Massachusetts native scored 13 goals and collected 28 points while playing in each of the Flock's 76 games.

"Obi deserves to continue his improvement as a player with us," said Anzalone. "His performance last year as a power forward with a mix of grit and smarts makes him an appropriate guy to lean on in his second season."

Aduba joined the Mallards after scoring 28 goals and totaling 61 points in 47 games with the Danbury Mad Hatters of the Eastern Professional Hockey League in 2008-09. He also played one game with the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL in 2008-09. The 6' 1", 210-pound Aduba played three seasons at Massachusetts-Amherst. He scored twice and recorded nine points in 62 games as a collegian.

McMillan and Aduba join Nick DeCroo, Jason Dolgy, Jason Kostadine, Patrik Levesque, Shane Lovdahl, Brandon Marino and Ryan Palmer to bring the number of players signed by the Mallards' for 2010-11 to nine.

The Mallards will open their first CHL season on home ice on Saturday night, October 16, at 7:05 p.m. against the Odessa Jackalopes. Mallards 2010-11 ticket packages are now available to meet any budget or schedule. For more information on ticket packages for the upcoming season, contact the Mallards at (309) 277-1364. Single game seats will go on sale in the fall on a date to be announced.
