Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings News Release

BOSSIER CITY - The arena football league that calls Bossier City's Century Tel Center a port of call on Saturday will bring one of East Texas' storied football heroes closer to home.

Chavis McCollister, a four-sport standout at Tenaha High School and the holder of a number of Texas' top high school football performances, takes the field Saturday evening for the Amarillo Dusters when they face the Bossier/Shreveport Battle Wings. Kick-off for the contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bossier City's Century Tel Center.

McCollister, on the Amarillo active roster after starting the season on the injured reserve list, took the Class A Teneha Tigers to an undefeated season and the state football championship in 1998. By the time he'd finished four years at the school south of Carthage, McCollister's Tigers had gone 46-7-1 and he had in his own possession a number of Texas' prep football's top season and career performances: 37 TD passes in 1997 after throwing 31 the year before, both rank in the top 40 all-time in Texas and are one and two in East Texas; 6,772 career passing yards (12th best in Texas, tops in East Texas) and a state-record setting 94 touchdown passes in his career.

As dangerous afoot as he was rolling around the backfield looking for a target downfield, McCollister rushed for 1,620 yards in 1997, a season in which he also passed for a school-record 385 yards against Logansport, LA. His career scoring totals - 656 points tallied - remains a record at the small school.

McCollister's athletic ability wasn't limited one bit to the football field, although he achieved his greatest success on the gridiron in college (All-Conference at Trinity Valley JC in 1999 and 2000). Nearing high school graduation in 1999, he was being courted not only in football but also basketball and baseball by colleges and the pros. Some of his decision-making time that spring came while competing at the state track meet in Austin, where he competed in the long jump for the second consecutive year (finished 4th in 1997 with a leap of 21-81/2).

After Trinity Valley, McCollister went to Tarleton State in Stephenville, finishing up his collegiate career on both the football and basketball teams and earning letters in both sports during the 2001-02 and 2002-03 school years. On the hardwood, he was a dangerous threat from three-point land and had some of the quickest hands on the team as attested by his steals and assists totals.

Tickets for Saturday's game between McCollister's Dusters and the Bossier/Shreveport Battle Wings range from $12 to $35 and can be purchased by calling the 'Wings front office (318) 746-8755 or from the Century Cel Center ticket office the day of the game.
