State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Ryan McCarvel led the drive with his fifth homer of the season and three runs batted in as the Spikes got back on the winning trail with a 9-3 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
A crowd of 5,489 fans, the second-largest to see a Spikes (19-10) game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park this season, saw a special Cowboy Monkey Rodeo performance by Tim "Wild Thang" Lepard and Team GhostRiders throughout the night as State College ended a four-game slide.
McCarvel's blast to the Pepsi Picnic Pavilion in left field in the third inning broke a 3-3 tie, and his two-run single in the fourth helped power the Spikes surge.
The Spikes also produced offense with their eyes, walking 16 times to set a new single-game record, breaking the old mark of 13 set against Jamestown on June 29, 2010.
State College scored in each of the first five innings to build its lead, with new addition Matt Davis producing the first two RBI of his professional career with a single in the first. Tommy Edman then tied the game in the second with a sacrifice fly before scoring on a wild pitch in the fourth.
Riley Drongesen then legged out a triple to bring in another run in the fifth before Edman's double in the same frame completed the scoring.
Spikes starter Steven Farinaro (4-0) earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out seven batters over six innings of work.
Scrappers (10-19) reliever Dace Kime (0-2) took his second loss against State College, giving up four runs on three hits and four walks while striking out three over two innings of work.
Mahoning Valley used six pitchers in the game, with each walking at least one batter. First baseman Nate Winfrey finished the night, recording the last three outs in the eighth inning.
The Spikes will now take an overnight bus ride to Massachusetts and start a three-game series against the Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox) on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Right-hander Ronnie Williams (3-1) gets the ball for State College in the opener at Edward A. LeLacheur Park. Lowell has not yet announced its starter.
After the set in Lowell, the Spikes return home on Thursday to start a three-game series against the Auburn Doubledays (Washington Nationals) with a 7:05 p.m. matchup on $1 Beer Thursday, presented by BIG Froggy 101. The homestand is also highlighted by Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State Night presented by HRI, Inc. on Friday with a Road to the Show Poster Giveaway for the first 1,000 fans and a Game-Used Hat Auction to benefit Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State.
Saturday, the first 1,000 fans will receive a Spikes Mini-Football Giveaway presented by Penn State Health during the 1986 National Championship 30th Anniversary Celebration, with a pre-game action sports demonstration and post-game FIREWORKS on TEAM REAM Day.
