Augusta GreenJackets News Release
North Augusta, SC - The Augusta GreenJackets (Atlanta Braves) fell 7-3 to the Charleston RiverDogs (Tampa Bay Rays) on a humid Friday night at SRP Park. Augusta (14-16) trailed wire-to-wire as Charleston (12-19) hit two home runs in the win.
The game began in a rain delay, but once the storm subsided, Owen Murphy (L, 0-2) took the mound. The RiverDogs took a 2-0 lead in the first and did not trail after that, adding another in the second. The GreenJackets got one back in the bottom of inning two, as Ethan Workinger drove home Jeremy Celedonio with an RBI double. A David McCabe RBI double in the third trimmed it to a one-run game at 3-2.
Jason Franks entered in relief of Murphy in the third, and he dealt two scoreless innings, striking out four of the six batters he faced. Jared Johnson was the next bullpen arm to pitch, and he went 3.1 innings, giving up three runs.
After a David McCabe RBI single in the fifth, the RiverDogs added two more in the eighth to make it 7-3. However, Bryson Worrell delivered his first hit as a GreenJacket in the bottom of the eighth, launching a three-run home run over the TaxSlayer Terrace to trim it to a one-run game. In the top of the ninth, going against debutant Rolando Gutierrez, the RiverDogs tacked on four more runs to make it 11-6, which remained the final score.
David McCabe had three hits in the loss, and Ethan Workinger's double made it 14 straight games with a hit, which is the longest active hit streak in all of baseball and the longest such streak since the GreenJackets became a Braves affiliate. The GreenJackets struck out 18 times and made five errors in the loss.
The series with Charleston continues tomorrow at 6:05 at SRP Park. Adam Shoemaker will be the starter for the GreenJackets. For tickets, information on promotions, and more, visit greenjacketsbaseball.com!
