Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release
HIDALGO, TX: January 24, 2005 â The Rio Grande Valley Dorados of arenafootball2 are thrilled to announce they have been assigned wide receiver / defensive back Travis McAlpine by the af2 for the 2005 season.
"Travis did a lot of good things for us (Tennessee Valley) last season," said Dorados Head Coach Kevin Guy. "He knows my system, has the best hands on the team and is a big receiver that can get things done around the goal line. I definitely think he can play at the next level."
McAlpine (mack al-pine) spent his first season of professional football last season playing under Guy with the Tennessee Valley Vipers. The 6'2" 210-pound rookie played in 16 games last season with the Vipers and was a two-way threat. On offense, he recorded 39 receptions for 419 yards and 9 touchdowns, which all ranked third on the squad. On defense, he co-led the team in interceptions (4) and ranked third on the club in tackles with 33 (28 assisted tackles ranked second on the team). McAlpine registered 480 all-purpose yards to rank third on the squad.
A native of Pontiac, Michigan, McAlpine played college football alongside Dorados kicker Eric Houle at Saginaw Valley State (University Center, MI). McAlpine played in 41 games from 1999 - 2002 for the Cardinals program, which qualified for the playoffs in his final three seasons, and combined for 123 receptions for 1,961 yards and 17 touchdowns in his college career. The 2002 All-GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) First Team member left the Cardinals ranking fifth in school history in receiving yards, receptions and touchdown receptions. Prior to Saginaw Valley State, McAlpine was a graduate of Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, where he set the school records for longest touchdown reception (74), career receptions (38) and career interceptions (11).
The addition of McAlpine is the ninth member announced to the Dorados 2005 roster, joining Brian Baker (QB), John Bradley (OL/DL), Will Goodloe (OL/DL), Josh Kellett (QB), Joseph Lemberg (OS), Moses Lewis (TBD), David Morrill (FB/LB) and Josh Tubbs (OL/DL). McAlpine is the fourth player to join the Dorados that played last season under Guy in Tennessee Valley, joining Baker, Bradley and Kellett.
