Kansas City Mavericks News Release
TULSA, Okla. - The Kansas City Mavericks (11-3-1-0) started fast but were unable to fend off the Tulsa Oilers (11-2-2-2), taking a 3-2 loss Sunday evening at the B.O.K. Center.
A back-and-forth first period ended in a 2-2 stalemate after an action-packed first 20 minutes. Kansas City struck first and struck early, Mike Panowyk's second goal of the season to take a 1-0 lead just 3:05 into the game. Tulsa countered with back-to-back goals, Jared Thomas and Ian McNulty over a seven-minute span to take a 2-1 lead until Matt Robertson went five-hole on a breakaway with 2:08 remaining to draw even into the locker room.
A slower second frame saw the home team take the lead, Kyle Rhodes lighting the lamp at 15:09 on the power play for a 3-2 edge after 40 minutes. The middle period saw the game tighten up with the teams combining for just 14 shots on goal - five for KC and nine for Tulsa.
The clubs played to a scoreless draw in the third period, Tulsa putting the defensive clamps on while limiting Kansas City to just eight shots and registering only two of its own.
The Mavericks will head to Wichita for a Tuesday night tilt against the Thunder, a 7:05 p.m. puck drop.
