Quad City Mallards News Release
INDEPENDENCE, MO - Evan Vossen's second period goal stood up as the game winner and Shane Owen made 33 saves as the host Missouri Mavericks defeated the Quad City Mallards 3-1 Saturday night. The loss ended the Mallards' (19-10-8, 46 points) four game regulation unbeaten streak while the victory was the fourth in five games for the Mavericks (26-12-2, 54 points)
Vossen snapped home a centering feed from Tyler Currier to break a 1-1 deadlock at 15:47 of the second period.
Owen made a series of fine saves to keep the Mavericks on top- even after the Mallards pulled goaltender Ty Rimmer (32 saves) with a minute and 27 seconds left in the third period and pressed hard for a late equalizer- and set the stage for Trevor Kell to score a clinching empty net goal with 32 seconds left in the contest.
The Mallards were on the power play when Vladimir Nikiforov opened the scoring by sweeping in Jeff Lee's centering pass at 6:15 of the first period. Despite being outplayed over the course of the first- the Mallards had a 17-9 advantage in shots on goal over the opening 20 minutes- the Mavericks would rebound to tie the game with Eric Castonguay's point blank backhander at the 18:18 mark.
