Maurice Jones Sr., Joel Friesen Named Players of the Week
December 9, 2018 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) News Release
The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that Maurice Jones, Sr. of the St. John's Edge has been named Player of the Week for the week ending December 9, 2018.
Jones, a 5'7" guard who played collegiately at Northwood, earned the NBL's first triple-double of the 2018-19 season when his 19 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds helped the Edge surpass Cape Breton 109-92.
"I think that Mo's the heartbeat of our team," said Edge head coach Doug Plumb, "and I think that in the past couple of games he took the leadership by the horns and dictated how we're going to play. I thought that Mo was fantastic in that game, he took the team on his back. I was watching the film and my 5'7" guy is boxing out 6'5" forwards and getting rebounds."
The National Basketball League of Canada is also pleased to announce that Joel Friesen of the Kitchener-Waterloo Titans has been named Canadian Player of the Week for the week ending December 9, 2018.
In his first game with the Titans this season, Friesen, a 6'4 guard who played collegiately at Alberta, came off the bench to score 31 points and pull down six rebounds in the Titans' 123-97 Sunday afternoon game against the London Lightning.
"Joel has been a significant part of our league for the past three seasons," said Chuck Miller, NBL Canada League Statistician. "And in his first game back in the NBL, and coming off the bench, he drops 31 points against his old team. That's showing some serious fire."
