Maulers sorting out signal callers

March 30, 2006 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Montgomery Bears News Release

Who will be the starting quarterback for the Maulers this Saturday night? That's the question being asked by Maulers fans this week. Dixie Wooton started in the season opener but struggled through out the first half. JR Richardson, who led the team most of last year, took over in the second half and sparked the team to it's only score of the night but the offense still had a bad night overall.

There's another factor in the quarterback equation, JP Holly. Holly, from Millbrook, has been practicing with the team but had a medical procedure and wasn't ready for the first game. The understanding is that he could be ready to play this week. Does Head Coach David Daniels have too many QB's in the pool?

Coach Daniels said, "J.R. (Richardson) is definitely in the mix. He's good wherever I put him." Defensively, the Maulers couldn't stop the running attack of the Fayetteville Guard.

On the "Good Morning Montgomery" TV show this week one of the hosts said it looked like the Maulers "were drugged, the Guard drug them all over the field".

Well, in reality, there's a lot of truth to that. The Maulers coaching staff and the players stated this week, "that will not happen again". Richardson said, "That was not the Maulers last week. You'll see a completely different team this Saturday night." Defensive coordinator Carlos Clayton agreed, "We just were not ready, we thought we were but we weren't. I guarantee, no one will run on us like that again."

Daniels said, "You can't fault the defense much, we (the offense) left them out there most of the evening. If the offense had been clicking they (the defense) would have had a lot better night." Daniels continued, "We learned a lot about our team and our coaching staff. I feel confident that we've made the necessary changes and you'll see the old championship Maulers this week."

The Tennessee River Sharks come to Garrett Coliseum the week. The River Sharks are a new franchise team of the NIFL. Their first game of the season against Monroe, LA was a win. After two bye's the Maulers will be their second game of the season. Kickoff at Garrett Coliseum is 7:00 PM, the doors open at 6:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased on line at www.ticketmastere.com, at the gate or in advance at the Maulers office in Eastdale Mall.
