Maulers' rust shows in opener
March 30, 2006 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Montgomery Bears News Release
The Maulers took it on the chin Saturday night in their season opener losing to the Fayetteville Guard 44-7. Wilmont Perry of the Guard scored on a 6 yard run late in the first quarter. A Withy-Allen 4 yard pass to Jay Jackson was good early in the second quarter for 6 points. Two point conversions on both touchdowns gave the Guard a 16-0 lead. Fayetteville scored again before the half 22-0.
The Maulers were scoreless until the third quarter when Silas Daniels scored on a 28 yard reception from JR Richardson. Brian Bostick's extra point kick was good making the score 22-7. That was the final score of the evening for the Maulers.
The Maulers never got on track and the Guard made few mistakes. Fayetteville's running game was effective and they stuck with it. Time of possession was Fayetteville 34:07, Maulers 23:32. The Maulers had 5 first downs to the Guard's 19.
The Maulers did not look like a division championship team and apparently have a lot of work to do to live up to their 2005 level of play.
The Tennessee River Shark of Chattanooga come to the coliseum this Saturday night with a kickoff scheduled for 7:00 PM. The River Sharks are a new franchise team this year and are coming off a win over Monroe, LA.
