Maulers sign brothers

February 16, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Montgomery Bears News Release

The Montgomery Maulers have signed a pair of players who won't have to introduce themselves to each other when training camp begins. Former Atlanta Falcon and Troy receiver Mareno Philyaw and his younger brother David, who also played at Troy, have signed for the 2005 season.

Mareno Philyaw, 27, is considered one of the best and most versatile athletes to ever play at Troy (1996-99). During his college career, he caught 59 passes for 1,097 yards and seven touchdowns; ran for 665 yards and eight touchdowns; and had 836 yards in kickoff returns. He also passed for 146 yards when he played quarterback as a sophomore.

A sixth round NFL draft pick at wide receiver by Atlanta in 2000, Philyaw played in only one game in two seasons with the Falcons. After a brief stint with the Carolina Panthers in 2002, Philyaw was signed by Dallas of the Arena Football League.

His younger brother, David, 25, played defensive back at Troy from 1999-2002. A starting cornerback as a freshman, he played in every game during his final three years at the school. As a pro, he started six games last year for Houma (LA) of the National Indoor Football League (NIFL). In six starts, he recorded 13 tackles and an interception as the Bayou Bucks earned a playoff berth with an 11-3 record.

An expansion franchise in the National Indoor Football League (NIFL), the Montgomery Maulers offer seven nights of hard-hitting, high-scoring, "edge of your seat" excitement at historic Garrett Coliseum. The Maulers play their first-ever game on March 19 at Kissimmee, FL. The first home game is Saturday, April 2 against the SW Louisiana Swashbucklers. Season tickets start at $49 and are available by calling (334) 277-1881, visiting the Maulers' office at Eastdale Mall, or logging on to montgomerymaulers.com.
