Montgomery Bears News Release
Montgomery, AL â The Montgomery Maulers Indoor Football team takes a look at back at the previous games as they have a week off before their second home game on April 23rd. The team has had many highlights in its inaugural season.
The season started off with a bang as the Maulers defeated the Kissimmee Kreatures 71-63 in the franchise's first game for the Atlantic Conference in the National Indoor Football League (NIFL). The team scored on all ten offensive possessions and defensive back David Philyaw recovered a fumble in the endzone for the other touchdown of the game.
The Maulers were not as successful on their second outing as they fell to the Rome Renegades 33-21. The team had a chance to win the game but a late fourth quarter interception returned for a touchdown sealed the deal for the Renegades. Running back Chrys Chukwuma scored all three touchdowns for the Maulers and a total of 77 rushing yards.
In their home opener, the Maulers defeated the Southwest Louisiana Swashbucklers 41-30. Chukwuma set the franchise record for rushing yards in a game at 138 yards. The Maulers held the Swashbucklers scoreless for the last 20 minutes of the game. In front of a crowd of 5,104 Philyaw recorded his second fumble recovery for a touchdown of the season.
Going back on the road for a unique schedule the Maulers played two games, one Saturday and one Sunday. In the Saturday game against the River City Rage the Maulers lost 90-39. Chukwuma extended his scoring streak to four games by recording two touchdowns for 53 total rushing yards.
In the Sunday game against the Dayton Warbirds, the Maulers lost a close game by six points with a final score of 48-42. The Maulers scored 19 unanswered points in the third and fourth quarter to take their first lead of the game. However, the Warbirds fought back to regain the lead, with a last second drive by the Maulers coming up short to win the ballgame.
The next five of six games are at home for the Maulers with the first one being April 23rd when the Maulers will host the Fayetteville Guard.
