Orange County Flyers News Release
FULLERTON, Calif. (August 22, 2010) - The Orange County Flyers fought off the first four deficits, but Na Koa Ikaika Maui eventually pulled away for a 14-11 win in a near-four-hour game, snapping the Flyers 11-game winning streak on Sunday at Goodwin Field. Pete Farina, who entered the game at catcher in the fifth inning after several Maui players and manager Corey Snyder were ejected, drove in the game-winning run with a tie-breaking double in the seventh inning.
Orange County (22-6 second half, 44-29) used homeruns from Sergio Pedroza and Julian Benavidez, who have combined for six homeruns over the Flyers last four games.
After Maui's Fehlandt Lentini began the game with a solo homerun, OC's Jimmy Rohan responded with a two-run single in the bottom of the first. Maui added runs in the second and fourth to get back on top, 3-2. Benavidez blasted a two-run homerun (8) and starting pitcher Kevin Altman added an RBI single as the Flyers reclaimed the lead, 5-3.
Maui returned fire with a four-run fifth inning highlighted by Chester Wilson's three-run homerun. The Flyers responded with a four-run inning of their own in the bottom of the frame. After a David Harris RBI fielder's choice that scored Pedroza, Derek Perren doubled down the left field line to bring home two Flyers and ignite a fair-vs.-foul argument from the Ikaika dugout. Manager Corey Snyder, starting pitcher Wes Ethridge and catcher Phil Avlas were ejected in the aftermath. Cha-Seung Baek added an RBI single in the inning.
The Strong Warriors struck for a second straight four-run inning in the sixth with RBI hits from Wilson and Michael Higa for a 11-9 lead. Pedroza added his solo homerun (13) and Benavidez scored on a wild pitch with two outs in tie the game, 11-11, after six innings. The Flyers would not score again in the game.
Farina's RBI-double in the seventh and closer Jamie Vermilyea's two-run single in the ninth provided the three-run margin for Maui's victory. The Flyers hadn't lost since the first game of an August 3 doubleheader against the Victoria Seals.
Orange County will face Na Koa Ikaika Maui (The Maui Strong Warriors) for games two and three of the series starting on Tuesday with a doubleheader starting at 5:05pm.
