Tucson Toros News Release
Yuma, AZ - The Tucson Toros defeated the Yuma Scorpions in both games of a doubleheader on Sunday, wining 7-3 in the series opener and 3-1 in the second game.
Six of Tucson's eleven hit in the first contest went for extra bases, including five doubles and triples. Most of Tucson's damage was down by the second through first hitters in the lineup, with RF Ron Perodin, SS Ryan Priddy, LF Lino Garcia and 1B Cristobal Santana all enjoying multi-hit games with at least one extra base hit. Garcia led the way with 3 hits and a pair of doubles. Perodin had the lone triple of the contest. James Garcia allowed 3 runs in 5 innings to win for the 6th time this season, moving him into a tie with fellow right John Bannister for the most on the team.
Tucson got all of the offense they would need in the nightcap in the first inning, scoring 3 two out runs on a 3 hits and a pair of Scorpion errors. The Toros would muster just 2 additional hits in the game, but starter Brian Daly made the early lead last with 5 innings on 1-run ball to earn his first win of the season. Reliever Jason Hanna put 3 men on base in the 6th on a hit and 2 walks, but was able to get out of trouble unscathed. Closer Emiliano Fruto followed in the dominant fashion, striking out all 3 batters in the 7th to lock down his 16th save of the season. Fruto is now tied for 3rd in the league in saves, just 3 behind the league leader.
The Toros and Scorpions will wrap up the 3 game series in Yuma on Monday, with a first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Tucson time.
