Matteau and Létourneau named honorary captains of ADT Canada-Russia Challenge
November 7, 2006 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release
BOUCHERVILLE, Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - The Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and the Val-d'Or Foreurs, in collaboration with the CHL and the QMJHL, today announced the honorary captains of the upcoming ADT Canada-Russia Challenge.
Stéphane Matteau, a Rouyn-Noranda native, who played four seasons with the Hull Olympiques before enjoying a lengthy NHL career, has been named the Honorary Captain of Team QMJHL for the first game of the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge, which will be held at the Dave Keon Arena in Rouyn-Noranda on Monday, November 20. In two hundred and forty-five QMJHL games, the fiery forward collected ninety-four goals and two hundred and thirty-five points. His rugged style of play earned him just over five hundred penalty minutes. Matteau also won two President Cups (1986 & 1988).
"We chose to approach Stéphane for a few reasons. First and foremost, he hails from Rouyn-Noranda. Secondly, he had a fine career in the National Hockey League and also won the Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994. Those accomplishments are a source of great pride for the City and for our organization," commented Huskies Governor Pierre Cloutier.
Mathieu Létourneau, who played five seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, including three with the Foreurs, has been named the Honorary Captain of Team QMJHL for the second game of the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge, which will be held at the Air Creebec Centre in Val-d'Or on November 21. As a member of the Foreurs, he tallied sixteen goals and eighty-six assists in one hundred and eighty-five games. He also won a President Cup title (1998).
"Our main goal was to choose one of our ex-players for this event. Mathieu is from Val-d'Or and he won a President Cup with the team. He also was one of the first players we drafted," mentioned Pierre Dufour, the Administrative and Marketing Director of the Foreurs hockey club.
The ADT Canada-Russia Challenge will play a very important role in the selection process of Canada's World Junior Hockey Championship roster as well as the Under-18 roster. Both games will be televised nation-wide on Rogers Sportsnet and RDS.
