April 28, 2023 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)
San Diego Wave FC News Release
San Diego Wave FC (3-1-0, 9 points) returns to Snapdragon Stadium this Saturday, April 29, to take on Orlando Pride (0-4-0, 0 points) for the first time this season. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. PT with the match airing live on CBS Sports Network.
Saturday will be the Wave's third overall encounter with Orlando Pride with just two regular season meetings in 2022 and a series of 0-1-1 (W-L-D). Most notably, the Wave clinched its first-ever playoff berth with a 2-2 tie in Orlando on Sept. 25, 2022. After going down two goals, midfielders Taylor Kornieck and Makenzy Doniak each scored to help the team earn a point and a postseason run for San Diego. Midfielder Megan Dougherty Howard, who signed as a free agent with the Wave this offseason, scored in both matches of the fixture last season for Orlando.
The Pride has scored just one goal in four total matches thus far in 2023. Orlando's lone goal was scored by forward Messiah Bright against Angel City FC on April 2, at Exploria Stadium. Bright was drafted by the Pride in the second round, No. 21 overall, in the 2023 NWSL Draft.
San Diego Wave is coming off a 2-0 triumph against Angel City FC on Sunday evening at BMO Stadium. Midfielder Sofia Jakobsson and Doniak both came off the bench and scored to help the Wave bring three points home to San Diego. The win on the road marked the first shutout of the regular season for the Wave and the first-ever road win for the club against ACFC.
The Wave will host Superhero Night at Snapdragon Stadium, the team's first official theme night of 2023. Supporters can come dressed as their favorite superhero while cheering on the Wave. Festivities will include pre-game photo opportunities and additional superhero fun throughout the match.
